NY style salsa is the step on clave or tumbao. Step left foot on the beat 2 of the 2-3 clave or step left foot on the sound of "pa" when Conga goes "tuk Pak tuk tonton"（Break on 2）

As you get used to the clave, you will find how you feel good to dance on clave. I guarantee!!

Many styles in the world steps side to side insted of going forward and back. It seems Cuban doesn't care to break on the 1 or 3 or 5. Curazao steps right foot to break. This style also steps side to side a lot. In Puerto Rico there is other steps beside above which is the same as NY on 2.
